How to Make a Jumpsuit
How to Make a Jumpsuit is a large-scale installation consisting of three monumental hand-embroidered silk panels, a silk jumpsuit, sculptural elements, and an embroidered poem written by the artist.
Across the panels, life-sized female figures are mapped with colorful meridian points derived from Traditional Chinese Medicine and surrounded by commercial jumpsuit pattern pieces. These pattern pieces function as both a metaphor for and a visualization of patriarchal ideology. The jumpsuit is transformed from a garment into a system that suppresses and exploits femininity.
Intentionally scaled smaller than the figures, the pattern pieces suggest the limits of human-made systems when confronted with the complexity and vitality of living systems.
Ultimately, it asks what is lost when human-made structures become disconnected from the intelligence of the body and the wider ecosystem.
